Geelong Lutheran College’s Middle School Robotics team is United States bound after claiming a podium finish at the recent First Lego League Nationals.
The GLC team, SEMATICS102, finished 2nd in the Champion’s Award and will now represent Australia at an invitational event in May 2020, at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The competition attracted 1000 team entries from across the nation, competing firstly in regional events before divisional national events took place over the weekend. "The Champion’s Award encompasses excellence across core values, robot design and programming, an innovation project and robots completing challenges within a two-and-a-half-minute time-frame," GLC teacher and coach Jane Hollett said.
The weekend event, at Melbourne’s Swinburne University, was themed City Shaper and involved students identifying a problem that exists within buildings or public spaces, and then researching and developing a solution.
"The FLL teams take the opportunity to experience all the steps of a real product development process," Mrs Hollett said. "Teams build, program and test an autonomous robot to solve missions related to them and compete against each other on the day for points."
The team’s project was also nominated for the Global Innovation Award which will be judged in California during June.
