What will they inspire to be?
I’ve had a great interest in the contribution of the USA Founding Fathers, having had the opportunity to visit the homes of George Washington at Mt Vernon and Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, both in Virginia. On Saturday, I had the pleasure of seeing Hamilton, the sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said that he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
From very humble beginnings in Nevis, British West Indies, Alexander Hamilton has a number of significant claims to fame. He:
- fought in the American Revolutionary War, as a captain of artillery and eventually became the aide de camp (confidential assistant) to General George Washington;
- helped draft the Constitution - he was a self-taught lawyer who passed his law degree examination in six months; and
- served as the first secretary of the treasury and was the founder and chief architect of the American financial system.
This leads me to think about the inspiring young people in our care at both campuses of Geelong Lutheran College; what will they aspire to be, how will they contribute to our country and the world and what will they be known for? I pray that they will make a strong, positive contribution to whatever career they decide to pursue when they graduate from the College, with the help of God.
